4. Pharmaceutical drugs that gross more than $1billion.
That’s right. One pharmaceutical blockbusting drug grosses as much as ten $100 million Hollywood blockbusters. And there were 60 blockbuster drugs in 2011.
That’s a lot of money. Jon O.Neher in the journal of Evidence-Based Practice suggests that a portion of the funds go to more research to prove that the drug is really good. “Many blockbuster drugs are supported by trials with only modest numbers, intermediate endpoints, short follow-up and poor toxicity reporting,” he notes.
We can do better than that.
We can bust some blocks and get cracking to make sure the money we’re spending on medicines is giving us the most bang for our buck.
